Madagascar Photo Gallery: Nosy Lava (Long Island)

Nosy Lava (Long Island) is about 15 km off the coast of Ananalava. It is a former maximum-security men's prison. Some of the former inmates still live in the island's three small villages. The prison closed in 2002. The guide here, Samuel, is a former prisoner who is forbidden to leave the island. A lighthouse built in 1910 stands on the island's highest point, with views to the north of the resort island of Nosy Saba. The island houses royal Sakalava tombs, currently off-limits (fody) to foreigners.
